The Engineering and Science University Magnet School (ESUMS) opened its doors in the fall of 2008.Currently enrolled with 6th and 7th graders, the goal is to enroll 88 new students each successive year, with full enrollment of 616 expected in 2014. The proposed site for the new building is located near the University of New Haven in West Haven. St. Stanislaus, State Street, will be the 2-year swing space.

College preparatory in nature, the school engages the students in the co-construction of curriculum through hands-on and minds-on activities and assessments that continually ask the students not only to imagine, investigate, and invent but to critically think, write, and speak. Coupled with self and peer critique, students are challenged to see themselves through multiple lenses as they become exposed to and literate in cross-curriculum principals of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

ESUMS accomplished this by exposing students to nationally recognized, problem-based math and science curriculum that is relevant, rigorous, and challenging with hands-on, real-world problems designed to help students construct knowledge in a meaningful way. Secondly, core values of respect, know, excel, and expect and a dress code facilitates a learning environment with strong work ethic and a life-long thirst for knowledge, while partnering with UNH and community partners give students an opportunity to participate in the Early College Program.

To that end, ESUMS is committed to:

  • cultivating a love for imaginative learning
  • preparing our students for higher education
  • shaping 21st century leaders in STEM

What our students are saying...

“My favorite experiences at ESUMS so far have been building an electromagnet for engineering class and going to Nature's Classroom. Other kids should attend ESUMS if they like to build contraptions or if they are budding scientists. They will like the projects and the things they learn. My brother wants to go to ESUMS so he can learn the things I am learning!” - Henry L., 7th Grade, Milford

“ESUMS is a great learning experience! Because of hands-on learning, we have fun learning.” – Jayquan H., 6th Grade, Hamden
