Dear Families,

We in the New Haven Public Schools are excited to welcome you and your student into our family. Choosing a school for your child is an important decision, and families often prioritize different things in their school decisions, so we are committed to helping you learn about and understand your options and supporting you in making an informed decision. We have a wide array of excellent and unique schools that all share one common goal – to help your child rise to success.

Our School Change initiative emphasizes preparing students for success in college, career, and life, recognizing that all kids want to rise and reach their goals. Through our School Choice program, we offer a range of options including neighborhood, magnet and charter schools, each with a unique set of programs, services, themes and community partnerships. For the first time, we are showcasing all of our schools here in one School Choice Guide, so you can see all school options in one place.

I’d like to highlight a few important changes this year that stem from parent and community input. We are combining our magnet school and neighborhood school lotteries into one process.  In addition, we are targeting outreach to new parents with our first Kindergarten Fair. We also plan to hold open house sessions at all of our schools, not just the magnet schools – another change this year.

In August, get ready for the Kindergarten Canvass, when teams of school and community volunteers hit the streets to welcome new kindergarteners into our district. Also be sure to check out Parent University, a parent support network that offers free workshops and access to resources. It’s never too early to start thinking about college, so learn about the New Haven Promise college scholarship program.

The first and most important step is to read this guide and learn about your options. We hope that changes to this year’s enrollment process will make it simpler and clearer to enroll your child in school. Welcome to New Haven Public Schools and we look forward the journey ahead.
